It's short and easy enough for Princess to be able to complete, and those are the types of hikes we are looking for. It's quite a lovely area, and some beautiful scenery overlooking Georgia Strait.
It was really windy today, but once we got into the trees, the wind all but vanished. The rock faces are not too steep, and Princess wanted to show me how to climb them, as she had been here before with Mylaela and her Gigi (grandmother).

The trails are well laid out, and while you do still need to watch the ground for exposed roots and rocks, it's not difficult at all to do. Once we got to the north end of the park, we could see Shack Island. It's a bunch of rustic shacks that were rented out in the 1930's, and as far as I know, are still used for summer, but I could be wrong. They all still look to be in great shape, and when the tide is in, you cannot walk to them.

Especially, delicious, and healthy ones. Living in an RV doesn't mean that you must live off of hotdogs over a campfire like you did as a kid. It means you can adjust your recipes to suit smaller appliances.

Last night, I decided to try out one of those dinners in a bag. Black Bean Chili! Basically, all you need to do, is add ground beef (or turkey), water, and a small can of tomato paste.

We like our foods a bit more hearty, so I added in some mushrooms, celery, many a small amount of purple onion as well.

After cooking the ground beef, which I seasoned (the recipe only calls to cook it and salt to taste), I set it aside then sauté the fresh veggies, after which, I added the water, the package, and the ground beef.

Then, after bringing to a boil, I turned the burner down low and simmered for a couple hours. The recipe wanted me to boil it for 30 minutes, but I really don't think that is going to bring out the flavour as well.

Results? A nice, thick, and very tasty Chili! We will certainly have to buy more of these dinners. They store easy, and being dehydrated, they stored for a very long time. I've had this bag for a couple years, and just kept forgetting about.

As an extra note on it being dehydrated, it all fluffed up and tasted just like it had when it was fresh!

I highly recommend these dinners.
We were able to bridge the gap quickly enough to start and run the engine, but it ran terribly all the way here.

My mechanic friend stopped by to have a look, and the wire was so old and corroded that the copper was barely copper anymore. So, we have a new junction box on the way from that same RV we got the other parts from. As I said before, I am sure happy this is all happening now, and not once we're on the road, and somewhere remote, or somewhere that it's against the rules to work on the engine.

Otherwise, the RV has been great, and we are getting settled in. Princess is loving her loft, and has been rearranging her stickers. Mostly onto the window, but if that's what makes her happy, then she can certainly do so! It is her space after all!

Both children have been sleeping really well over this past week, and I can only attribute it to all the fresh air they're getting at the park, and at the beach. They're doing really well with the noises from the road as well. It's not too loud, but with the windows open, the riders on motorbikes that have a need to be heard from three blocks away are a real nuisance. Especially when they open the clutch right beside us. It's not their fault, they have no idea that there are babies trying to nap, and they're just out for a ride in this beautiful weather. I can't fault them there. I'm more the silent type, I'd rather not be heard.

I'm starting a budget shortly as well, so stay tuned for more on that, as I'll describe it in a new post!Arathihttp://www.blogger.com/profile/15760100788994359369noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8152551290002696256.post-83639111506245842782016-05-03T15:35:00.002-07:002016-05-03T15:35:45.020-07:00Starting out, with children - what's not toldAs you know, we have two young children (3 and almost 1). Throughout all of my reading, not one blog really told me anything about how starting out could be. So, here I am to tell you!

It's insane.

Now, I'm not telling you any of this to discourage you, just to prepare you, because it WILL get better.

Routines are uprooted, noise is more, and light will always be an issue. If you're the type to use blackout blinds, stop. Immediately.

Rather than separate rooms, we all now share separate spaces, in basically one room. This means teaching Princess to use her inside voice, and learning to not do certain things during nap times.

Your kids will be stressed out the first while because things are different, you may have a baby that prefers to cry than sleep. It's not because this was a bad choice, it's because something big changed.

Then there is all that activity and fresh air. They're may not be used to being outside doing activities every single day and while they love it, is tires them. Our kids have slept fully throughout the night for the past two days, which is a first for Goober. Still, it's new to them, and they'll be cranky about it.

You just may ask yourself if this was actually worth it, and you need to remember what I just said. It's a break from routine, and everyone needs to adjust. Give it time, and a new routine will begin. A routine where the kids play outside daily, see new things, learn about different places, and naps are sometimes outside in the shade of an ancient tree that first sprouted before humans wandered onto the land, rather than in a bed.

They'll adapt, as will you. Set your lives free.

Don't give up.Arathihttp://www.blogger.com/profile/15760100788994359369noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8152551290002696256.post-57246914434671126272016-05-02T13:03:00.003-07:002016-05-02T13:05:23.417-07:00First full day in progress!Well, it's been a wild (and expensive) ride these past few weeks. Selling a lot of our stuff off, trading some things for smaller things (our huge mixer for a smaller, and our 42" LED TV for a 27"), and then moving a lot more stuff into a storage unit that we're not quite ready to get rid of just yet.

Then working on the RV, changing the oil, replacing a push rod that was very bent, replacing the battery, and cleaning the roof. Moving the stuff we need, and probably a bunch of stuff we don't, into the RV.

Then, yesterday's debacle that will now need to be resolved before we can truly launch.
Today, we are relaxing. Princess, Goober, and I (Arathi) went down to the beach, which is a block away from our RV, and played in the sand, while Mylaela sorted the RV, and got more things out away.

Our family member has a nifty backyard that is separated into two yards, one for her, and one for the basement suite. So we're using the other side, which on these hot days, is very nicely shaded. It also provides us with our own space, and privacy. Something that is very important when dealing with in-laws who are accustomed to having their own space alone!

We were able to even obtain a large dog crate to put the cats in so they can enjoy the outdoors as well. We're buying new harnesses and leashes for the tomorrow, but this crate will be perfect for when we want to put them outside, and not have to untangle them constantly.

All in all, despite the few issues we've had, there are absolutely no regrets, and we are excited to start this journey!
It's a very good thing that this was already the plan as well as we had some electrical issues that almost didn't allow us to get here.

We moved 8.4km from where we were originally parked, and it was a less than ideal drive. First, we drove to the local CO-OP gas station, and just as I was pulling in, I noticed smoke begin to billow out of the engine. I pulled into a spot and shut the engine off right away. Popped the hood, and discovered that one of the wires had burned through. The wire that burned/melted is required to actually start the engine, and without it, we have zero power to the engine.

As a quick fix, after filling the tires with air, we bridged the wires quickly with some cable I had in the RV. Just a quick connection, and the disconnect. This allowed us to get to our next stop, which was a family members home.

Shortly after, I messaged my friend, the mechanic, about the issue. As not only did this happen, the engine is running worse than is was before we did some work on it. I have a feeling that it's due to this burned out wire, but we also replaced a push rod, and I wonder if the timing is now severely off. We'll figure it out.

I'm just happy that all of these issues are happening before we are 100km from the nearest town!

So, we are stuck. Thankfully, we are stuck already parked at our first stop where we are not paying hundred of dollars in camping fees, and not allowed to work on the RV.Arathihttp://www.blogger.com/profile/15760100788994359369noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8152551290002696256.post-26524046324258748672016-04-30T17:01:00.002-07:002016-04-30T17:01:41.145-07:00Move out completed!Well, we are utterly exhausted.

Today, we handed back the keys to our three bedroom home to the landlord. This past week and a bit has been filled with constant trips to the storage unit for the things we're holding onto, as well as trips to the dump for the two dozen bags of garbage that we had. When you're getting ready to move into an RV, it's amazing all the trinkets you decide are better off in the trash.

We dropped off a couple boxes of books at the local second hand shop as well as some other things. We even dropped a bunch of stuff on the lawn with a "Free" sign, and that cleared up a lot as well.

Then came the cleaning, and scrubbing, and finally loading up stuff into the RV and the SUV that we still need to go through, but didn't have a chance.

We did hit a snag though already. The way I had the RV parked had it resting a couple tires on grass, which was slightly inclined. So, the front tire popped it's bead. The spare tire is now on, but I need to get the other tire repaired, asap. Then, we discovered that the power steering assembly is broken, and was spewing fluid out.

Talk about a bunch of crummy things happening all at once!

Our wonderful friends were over, and one is a mechanic, so he was able to source the part from a yard in Victoria, and have it delivered. It should be here in Nanaimo on Monday or Tuesday. Phew!

Our journey is so close to starting that even though we are tired, we are excited!

Stay tuned!Arathihttp://www.blogger.com/profile/15760100788994359369noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8152551290002696256.post-16909468468318179952016-04-22T13:29:00.000-07:002016-04-22T13:29:12.093-07:00Personalizing Princess' LoftWell, painting Miss princess' loft is complete, and today, she and my wife added in the personalization!
Princess was very excited to finally be able to add her stickers. She's been asking for two days, and very unrelenting in it as well.

It started out with just the newly dried walls. The purple and silver really work great together, we think.

Princess got to work right away on getting the stickers added to her walls. There are two different sets here. One is flowers and butterflies, and the other space objects. Stars, planets, and the like. It's glow in the dark, so that should keep her amused since she loves looking up at the stars already.

More Painting. We finally got the flooring completed, and bought some metal guards for the edges near the steps and front of the flooring where it was open and at risk of coming apart if we didn't add it in.

One more thing checked off the list!

Onto the Painting

Yesterday, we took a trip over to the local Rona and Princess picked out a colour for her loft, and after taping and filling in the nail holes I found, it was time to start painting!

I left the painting to my wife and daughter as a fun thing to do together, and the colour sure pops!

Today, the next coat goes on, and then Princess will be able to add her new stickers to it. We picked out the stickers yesterday as well, and I gave her the option of either butterflies, or stars. She picked the stars, but I know she'll like the butterflies as well, so I bought both.

Yesterday, my wife stained our trim after I was able to get it all cut, and today I installed it.
It looks great! Now, the last piece of the puzzle to get on the road is to get the RV registered and insured. There's a weird difference between BC and Alberta when it comes to vehicles.

In Alberta, you can yank the plate off an existing registered and insured vehicle for two weeks as long as you keep the bill of sale with you. Here in BC, there is no such thing apparently.

The last time that this RV was registered and insured was here in BC, so from what I have been told from a mechanic friend of mine here, I shouldn't have any issues, unless I meet an ICBC employee on a bad day.

After all, we just tuned it up, and it runs better than my mechanic friends racecar apparently. lol

We are three weeks away from being mobile now, and as I am one to always plan for the worst, we are able to stay with family if ICBC is terrible. I doubt it considering the experiences we've had so far, but I'm one to plan.

If the worst is to happen, we'll have time and money to fix it up while staying with family. I hope it doesn't come to that, but you really never know.

As an extra note, we replaced the tap for the kitchen sink. The old one was terrible, and was the most inflexible ribbed copper pipe you'd ever see. Even the guys at Rona laughed when they saw it. It was 40 years old. I had to add in a fitting to allow the new piping to work. Then I was able to install the sink again. After a day of letting it settle, and cleaning out the putty that would squeeze out, I was able to install the stove again.

Once we're in the RV, we're planning on weekly videos, and posts. Probably more on the posts. It takes time to edit videos.

We're ever so slowly making headway, and the results look amazing indeed!

Once I have all the trim cut to size, we'll be staining it, and then nailing it in. I'm stuck using a mitre saw for this, and after a couple hours, it's pretty hard on the arm, even though the trim is easy enough to cut. It's 11/16x11/16. Larger than I probably needed, but I wanted to make sure that there was no gap if the flooring expands and contracts, or possibly shifts while the RV is in motion. All of which I'm told shouldn't happen, but you never know.

This is one of the last big steps needed for the interior prior to leaving, as we can paint while in it. That's what I did before, and it worked just fine.

Last bit is to find a wingnut for the new tap on one side, as the one that comes with it is large and covers one of the spots that holds a bolt that secures the entire sink to the counter.

That'll be in another post!

Today we scrambled cleaning our three bedroom upper suite so that our landlord could show it to eight different groups in the hopes of renting it out for May 1st. We left, and our landlord was a little surprised that we were leaving, rather than staying and watching anyone coming through. I guess its a different mentality in BC. In Alberta, the landlord wants you no where near the property while they show it.

We drove down to the bay, and walked along the SeaWall, and while walking, we saw the foot ferry coming back from Protection Island and decided to hop on it and have dinner over there.

It was 20C today, blue skies, and calm waters. We took the ferry across and sat outside on the patio of the Dinghy Dock. We figured we would stay for a quick dinner and a drink, then head back, but we decided against rushing, and had some fun.

Princess and Goober had a blast fishing in the fishing hole that's specially made for kids right in the patio, and my wife and Princess enjoyed some time sticking their feet in the water.
Later, Princess and I did the same, and holy smokes, that it some super cold water right now! It took Princess all of one bob of the dock to get her sea legs and no longer worry about the movement of the entire area. The Dingy Dock and everything surrounding it is actually just floating on the water, so if any ship moves past too fast and creates a wake, everything rocks.

Princess even made a friend with another girl her age that's from Edmonton, Alberta. They shared a pretty big hug and even corn (that was supposed to be for fishing).

We had the best burgers we have had since moving to BC last year, and I recommend going there for not only the experience, but the food. My wife says the Fish and Chips are amazing as well.

After we docked back on the Nanaimo side, we stopped for an ice cream, and then headed home. While getting Princess ready for bed and snuggling her, she looked at me and said, "I had fun. I had fun, daddy.", and then went to sleep.

Experiences are what life is about. My daughter loved our little outing today, and we will have so many more outings soon. We'll be able to afford these outings, and in so many different places.

Collect memories, not things. Your children will thank you for it.

It's real. It's scary and exciting at the same time.

We're also returning our Alberta bought SUV to save an additional $450/mth on top of the $1300/mth in rent, and $120 in internet and cable. For those counting, we're cutting costs by $1870/mth right off the bat.

The extras come in now as well. I have one more thing to fix in the engine of the RV which is minor before I register and insure it here in BC, where it was last actually registered and insured. Who knows how many years that has been.

My wife has a friend who's husband is a mechanic, and he's helped me get it fixed. Which I am so grateful for. We changed the seals, and oil, and in doing the seals, discovered that one of the push rods was so badly bent, he wanted to keep it. It was twisted like an "S" when it's supposed to be straight. That's not a good thing, and it's great I discovered it, because it would have destroyed the engine if left.

It also explains the backfiring I would occasionally get. So happy to have it replaced, and it was only $6, to save me several thousand.

I have the flooring in as well, but I need to get the trim done yet. Thankfully, that is minor, and can be done while we are in the RV.

The last part preventing us from move in ready is the sink. The connections are weird, and I may need to do some fixing. One of the plastic coupler's is a tad stripped. It's more because I can't get the stiff copper pipe to adjust right. It's ribbed to be flexible, and movable, but it just won't align right for the cold water. I'm taking it in tomorrow to see if I can swap it out, or get an updated stainless steel flexible pipe to replace. I certainly need to replace the faucet as that crappy copper pipe is actually welded in place. Seriously, RV's in the 70's were made without any consideration to improvements ever being made. Almost like the expected these things to be disposable.

Tomorrow, I head to the storage place, rent a unit for the stuff we're not giving up just yet. We're planning for the worst and hoping for the best. If it turns out that my wife hates this lifestyle, we'll still have furniture to go back to.

We're on our way in a month.

We're not sure yet where exactly we'll go first. We're playing with staying in Nanaimo, or driving north to Tofino. Only time will tell.Arathihttp://www.blogger.com/profile/15760100788994359369noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8152551290002696256.post-21349903371558378822016-03-15T20:49:00.000-07:002016-03-15T20:49:38.621-07:00Floor Installation Begins! Finally! Today, I was able to head out and buy a new blade for my saw, and a new square (mine is sitting in Alberta). After asking a few questions on a totally cool Facebook page called RV Remodeling, Decorating, and Renovations, I figured out what I should do about the flooring.

My biggest concern was the gap to leave for expansion, and if it would be an issue with an RV, and the movement. I need to leave 3/8ths of an inch for expansion all the way around, and that looks like a lot. I am concerned about it shifting while moving around. A guy who is on the page commented, and is the owner of a flooring store. He suggested making sure that I keep that gap, and avoiding gluing or stapling it down as it will buckle when it tries to expand/contract.

Today, I cut a bunch of 3/8th inch spacers from some left over wood I had, and I started to lay the flooring down. It's coming along beautifully!

I started late in the afternoon, so I was only able to work until about 7pm, as the sun had set, and my children are in bed. The sound of a saw running probably isn't the most conducive to their sleep. I'll start up again and finish in the morning.

Anyways, I think the flooring is going to look amazing! Here's what I have installed so far, and please excuse the lighting. I haven't replaced the lights with the LED's I'm planning on just yet!

The view from the door, looking back:

Rona had a sale this week on their laminate flooring. Buy one, get one half off. We needed four, so we really only paid for three.

The next step is to get some power running to the RV so I have power and heat to work. I need to buy a 30amp to 15amp converter plug so I can get those basics running. They're only about $8.00, and then I need the extension cords to run the power to where the RV is. I need two 15 meter cords as the RV is about 80 feet from the nearest outlet.

We went with a lighter grain, but not super light. It should complement the countertop nicely.

I'll get an image up soon, blogger won't upload from an iPad apparently.
Due to a delay in the stock for the specific design we wanted, I wasn't able to install the countertops before leaving for BC.

This was a blessing in disguise as well as I had a chance to use the RV and see what I wanted to change.

Today, after a lot of sweat, elbow grease, several choice words, and some fancy wiggling, I got the old counter out, and laid the new one on top for a fitting. The new counter has a lip underneath that the original did not, and it prevents the island for setting down correctly. So I'm going to need to get a router and shave 1/8" off each side to drop it into place. (Sorry for the fuzzy photo's. Taken with an older iPad)
Getting into the RV to do anything has been very difficult with Goober and his teething, as well as limited light, and constant rain.

Now, things are warming up, and while Goober only has four teeth currently, he's not a needy as he has been. We also came up across another roadblock, which may have been a blessing in disguise. The company I was working for decided to release me, and my sales guy. So, I've been unemployed since February 1st. I filed for EI, and now I'm getting it, and I can more realistically look for an appropriate job.

Currently, everything hiring is paying less than what I make on EI, at least here on the island, and we have no intention of moving to the mainland where costs of living will more than double what we have now.

A few days ago, my wife told me that while she has been back and forth on the idea of full timing, she thinks now would be the absolute perfect time to take the plunge. This is for several reasons, firstly, I'm not stuck in any one location now as I am not working. Secondly, the cost savings alone are worth going full time.

So, as I build my web hosting business up, we are planning on travelling the island, and hitting up different locations and festivals. It'll be a bit of a change for me, as I've never been unemployed for more than two months in the last 22 years.

So, we have an expected launch date of June 1st, 2016 in the RV. It's time to heavily renovate what I cannot do after we move in, such as the countertops. All measurements have been taken for the beds (to replace the cushions), the sink has been measured to see what we can replace it with.

I still need to measure out the actual floor space in order to replace the laminate with new flooring.

I also plan on replacing the hot water heater with a new on demand water heater for better showers, but that can be done afterwards as it's mostly exterior work.

Plenty to do in the next couple months! Stay tuned, as this blog is about to get a boost in posts, but not daily yet.Arathihttp://www.blogger.com/profile/15760100788994359369noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8152551290002696256.post-14804183637810362262016-02-08T12:35:00.000-08:002016-03-15T20:50:28.360-07:00Small UpdateIt's been quite some time since I posted an update. To followers of my blog, you know that this can be quite normal as I go from fulltiming to a stickbuilt and back.

Anyways...

Today is a lovely day here on Vancouver Island. The sun is shining, and the weather is warm enough to be outside without a jacket. So, I decided that I really should get some work done on the RV while I can.

The simplest thing I could do was install the new table that I had bought from my wife's company she worked at until last May.

It has a lip on it, which threw me off for a moment, but I broke down a board from a pallet I have, and it fit perfectly. This allowed me to attached the hardware that connects to the wall, and get this beauty installed!

The finished product!

It turns out hat it's about a half inch longer than the original table, so I have some work to do on the seats to make sure it fits when laid down as a bed, and still look nice.

Now that this is done, I'm pretty excited to start looking for the new hardware for the kitchen sink and tap. Once I find those, I can finally start replacing the kitchen counter as well.

Then after that is the bathroom counter with new hardware and then updating the vanity mirror, and the walls.

It's a slow process, but it'll come together soon enough. When most of your money goes into a stickbuilt, it's hard to do this with any sort of speed...Arathihttp://www.blogger.com/profile/15760100788994359369noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8152551290002696256.post-4162797586369135692015-09-16T20:50:00.000-07:002016-03-15T21:25:16.173-07:00Campground Review: Eaglewind RV Park, Aldergrove, BCI had work in Abbotsford to do where the security of the client required that I be onsite, so I could not work remotely. As it was work separated over a couple weeks, I opted to stay in an RV park nearby.
After looking online, I found that at least logistically, Eaglewind RV Park was the closest to my client.
Eaglewind RV Park is situated near Aldergrove, BC, but maps will also tell you it is near Langley, and Abbotsford as it's somewhat central to the three cities. Be careful when looking up RV parks and looking at transit options if you are not mobile outside of your RV. This RV park is four kilometers away from the nearest bus stop. It's about a 40 minute walk, or a $10 cab ride.

Noise:

The people staying are quiet, it's like many RV Parks. There are kids playing, and the typical noise from children enjoying themselves. That doesn't bug me one bit. However, the Trans-Canada Highway is literally across the street. Traffic is 24 hours a day, and the noise is constant. Think staying overnight in a WalMart parking lot right next to their busiest street.

Internet Access:

Amenities:

This park doesn't really offer a lot. It does have a pool and a hot tub, but they are both outside, and in full view of the rather large windows of the clubhouse, meaning that you have zero privacy to enjoy. There is no park of any kind for the children to play at, but there is room on a hill in the middle where one could be built, and perhaps that is the plan.

The Staff:

I didn't really meet much for staff, I saw one when I checked in, and that was that, so I couldn't tell you much more about them, or how friendly they are.

Facilities:

The clubhouse is very large, and very new. In the time I was there, I didn't see anyone use the lounge, which by the looks of it, is more geared towards functions over sitting back and watching the game on the TV.

There is a small coin operated laundry room, and bathrooms inside that have coin operated showers. $1 gets you seven minutes of shower time, this includes the time it takes to get it to a comfortable temperature that you can hop in. There is no warning when your time will be up, so toss in two dollars and do your thing.

If you are a working RVer, who likes to shower in the morning before work, depending on the time you start work, this may not be the park for you. The clubhouse, including showers is only open from 7:30am until 10pm. There are 24 hour bathrooms outside as well, but they are just bathrooms.

Conclusion:

It's a decent park, but not one to stay at if you are a fulltime Rver, or someone planning on heading out, and don't have alternate transportation. I won't be choosing to go back there personally, but that is more due to it's location, and sheer distance from the nearest transit stop.

I've learned that it really pays to pay attention to transit directions, and make sure that your Transit app, or Google maps are not also showing you "walking" distances...

The nearest bus stop is 4km away. The park is nice, but it is not for people who do not have addition means of transportation outside of their RV's...
I'll update more in a review after I have completed my stay here.Arathihttp://www.blogger.com/profile/15760100788994359369noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8152551290002696256.post-52096774393598733222015-09-13T23:02:00.000-07:002016-03-15T20:55:20.762-07:00Campground Review - Burnaby Caribou RV ParkI stayed at the Burnaby Caribou RV Park from March until June of 2015. Below is my review of my experiences there.

BCRV is within a very easy walking distance to the SkyTrain, and Costco is even closer. The park is relatively quiet. When I was first looking for potential parks to stay at, the Google reviews did concern me. There is a train line right next to the park, and Gaglardi Way is on yet another side. The Google reviews all scream about how terrible the place is, and how unfriendly the staff are. I decided to choose this park as it gave me a central location to my clients, and as I was alone, I could deal with some extra noise.
When I got to the park, I signed in, and got my site. I was quite close to the main building, which I what I requested in regards to internet access. This placed me very close to the main entrance.

The results?

I heard the train twice in the time I was there. That was because some idiot was on/too near the tracks, and the train was forced to sound the horn. As I understand it now having been there, the bad reviews come from tent campers. The tent camping section is literally in the corner of trains and highway. Folks, this park is called "Burnaby Caribou RV Park" for a reason. Seriously, who tent camps inside a city?

There is a river walk right behind the park, and I have to say that even though it took longer, I walked it to the main stores I went to. It is such an amazing and peaceful walk. On that note, the closest store is a Mac's convenience store at the Production Way SkyTrain station. Lougheed Mall is down the way, about a five minute drive, or a really nice 30 minute walk. The nearest liquor stores, and grocery stores are also near the mall, so you'll be walking if you don't also have an additional car.

Internet:

There are two providers at BCRV. There is the seemingly standard to RV parks, TengoInternet, and ShawOpen.

ShawOpen is only available if you are an existing Shaw customer (or know someone who can add your devices onto their account). Being a guy who has worked well over a decade in IT (Information Technology), I know the distances of WiFi. The ShawOpen is restricted here, in order to keep you inside the main building. I could occasionally get it to connect inside my RV, but the amount of metal would kill the connection eventually. Even outside the RV, the ShawOpen connection was spotty, and I was no more than 50 feet from the AP (Access Point).

As I work remotely, being forced to go inside the lounge where other people are while working with a client who can hear these people turn up the TV, and talking is really unacceptable.

TengoInternet is the "free" internet. By "free", I mean they give you a total of four hours per day. That's not even four consecutive hours. That's two hours per eight. Tengo also monitors how much you use and restricts you accordingly, not by username, but your MAC Address. Unless you know how to spoof your MAC, you are S.O.L...

Enjoy Netflix? TengoInternet thinks you are a major douchebag. Tengo allows a whopping 1.5mb down, and 0.5mb up. Want to upload photos from your trip to Facebook? hahahahaha. Nope. Well, maybe... If you want to upload them over several hours. It's just above a dial up connection when anyone else is connected.... Seriously.

TengoInternet does partner with another company called Boingo. For about $10/month you can get relatively unrestricted access to the internet. Your upload is still severely restricted, but you can at least watch Netflix without too many problems.

Skype is really the luck of the draw, as is Netflix. You are sharing the entire bandwidth with everyone else in the park that is connecting. The more people, the slower it is. Getting into June, watching Netflix was no longer an option. In fact, logging onto Facebook was almost impossible.

The Amenities:

BCRV is really clean. The main bathroom's are coded, so you need to know the passcode to get in. It's also closed for an hour every day while it's cleaned. The showers are not coin operated, and the hot water lasts a long time (depending on the time of day naturally). The best pressure is the showers closest to the inside wall.

The laundromat is super clean, and costs about as much as any laundromat would.

The games room is comprised of two pinball machines, and a couple driving arcade games. All but one side of the driving arcade were broken when I went in.

The exercise room is rather basic, but provides what a person would require to maintain a daily ritual.

The playground is simple, and geared more toward young children. My two year old daughter loved it, and I spent a lot of time climbing through tubes to go down a slide for her.

The Staff:

When I first got to BCRV, the staff were not very warm, nor were they cold. I would say they were indifferent. It was slightly off-putting considering that they are in the hospitality business. They do warm up however, and you can actually enjoy talking to them. It's a mostly family run business, and they really only get involved in your affairs if there are complaints.

Basically, be respectful, pay your dues, and all will be good.

One caveat to this is one guy there... I never learned his name as I chose to avoid him as much as possible. I learned that people call him the "Bylaw Nazi". He will not open the lounge a single second before 8am, and I personally witnessed him read the riot act to a couple kids under 10 for riding their bikes on the sidewalk next to the main building.

At the time, I was a smoker, and I was smoking on the deck, which is open to the air. I spent 15 minutes of my life listening about how because the deck had walls on two sides, Burnaby Bylaws prohibit smoking up there, and how much money it would cost if Bylaw happened through.

Otherwise, the staff are pretty cool. Just avoid doing anything other than standing and breathing when the Bylaw Nazi is near.

The Cost:

For my 24' RV, I paid a touch over $400 every two weeks. There are much larger units there, and I believe they pay around $1000 per month. There are no reservations, as people can choose to stay longer if they like, and just pay. It is a first come, first serve park. Call the day you're planning on getting there.

Your fee covers 60 kilowatts per week of power, water, and sewer. The propane truck comes by every Wednesday. There is an additional cost for cable, but I don't watch actual TV, so I have no idea it's cost. For the propane, they're usually pretty good. One week, I think I had a new guy filling. Propane tanks should never be filled past 80%, and I vented for four days as the guy filled to 100%... which I had to pay for.

Website:

It looks like someone made it in the free-est web editor they could find, and then hired someone who didn't know what the internet was, to build it. This could just be me though. I build websites for fun, and I'm a webhost.

Conclusion:

I would and will most certainly stay at this park again. Yes, I certainly recommend the park to others. My only big beef is really the internet. However, my career is deeply connected to a stable internet connection, and your experience may vary.

So I have a couple weeks worth of work to do with a client in Abbotsford, BC, and as such I pulled the RV out, and I"m now settled into an RV park as close as I could get to the city. I have to verify the distances with transit now as it didn't appear to be too far, but the people here are uncertain where the bus stop is.

I plan on taking a walk tonight to see where it is. Just Skyping with my wife first. Two things to note about this park, the WiFi is great and unrestricted, and I can hear the buzz of the TransCanada highway since it's really not that far away.

Pricing-wise, this place is a lot more expensive than the last park I was at in Burnaby. Costing me $500 for two weeks.

Getting here was easy enough, and only just under 10km away from where I was storing the RV. First thing I noticed was the tiny house, and I'm parked next to it. The owner came home as I was finishing setting up, and gave me a tour.

Really nice guy in his 20's. He and his wife recently moved it here. The inside is beautiful, and well planned out. I'm still a fan of a Gable roof for the bedroom, and this doesn't have that. I don't have pictures to share as that may have been creepy.

So I have been doing my best to explain to people about our plans to move into a fifth wheel and full time. When the typical person thinks about any sort of RV, they think more or less back to their childhood, and the crappy, and cramped campers of the time, and just cannot imagine anyone wanting to live like that.

I'm creating this post so that I can actually have the pictures of the one that my wife and I love, and would like to get. This way I can show that it's actually a really nice place. I've spoken about this one in the past a couple times, but this is the first time that I actually have a bunch of pictures to showcase.

It's now last years model, and the prices should start to fall a bit as RV dealerships are trying to get rid of the inventory, but even at that, I won't be able to get it just yet. I need to finish the renovations on the current RV and get it sold first as that money is going towards the downpayment for this one, or something very similar.

As an additional, the 37 ULTRA is identical by the looks of the floorplan. It very well could be that they are in fact the same model, and a lot of dealerships are confused by the naming convention. Here's a link (it may end up no longer working at some point) to the Heartland ER 37 ULTRA.

When we were first out looking, we were looking at Travel Trailers, but the beauty of this fifth wheel caught my eye, and I had to go look at it. It's brown and tan tones really appeal to me. On the outside, it has ample storage space, and two large propane tanks. The room for batteries could be a bit better, but I could make something to house more since we would be installing solar panels as well in order to be able to boondock.

Kitchen and Common Area

When my wife and I first walked into one of these units on an outing to see what would suit our family, we both loved the size of the common area and how everything just seemed to flow between the kitchen, dining area, and common room. The kitchen has a great area for working, and a very large fridge, something that is super important if you're planning on full timing with children.

Adding to the feeling of spaciousness is the fact that the ceiling is really high above your head. High enough to install a ceiling fan that you won't worry about bumping into.

The bunkhouse has room for four beds, placed inside the two slides. Having the two slides in this one room really opens it up. It is amazing how large the room is! It has three built into the walls, and one is the couch that fold out into a bed. The built in ones also fold up to provide extra space below if they're not in use. The entire back wall is closet space, and a spot for a TV. Let the kids play in their room and watch cartoons there! No more endless replay of a movie in the living room where you can't watch a show for yourself without a meltdown occurring!

Queen-size bed (King is optional), built in dresser, hookups for a TV, washer/dryer hookups, and loads of storage. The closet spans the entire width of the front. The master bedroom is where there is one slide, giving that additional space at the foot of the bed, and there is ample room to walk around the bed with the Queen size installed. Oh, and there is space under the bed as well. The mattress lifts up easily on rails to get at whatever is there. There's a second air conditioner unit here to keep things cool at night.

Three piece bathroom is the main bathroom. It has two doors, one into the common area, and a sliding door so that you don't have to wander out of your room at night undressed. Makes life a lot easier for sure! There's a skylight in the shower, so it helps add a lot of natural light to what are typically dark bathrooms.

All in all, this unit is perfect for our family, and I hope to be able to afford it soon, but only time will tell. The one thing that is missing for us, is a bathtub for the kids. We have seen other full time families use large basins in the shower as a bathtub, and I'm sure we could work something out for that, so it's not too big of an issue at all.
